Three different numbers describe your progress, and they are calculated in three different ways.
Category levels
Each of the nine categories has a level from 1 to 10, taken directly from its percentage mastered: level = percentage ÷ 10, rounded down, with a floor of 1. So 0-19% is level 1, 40-49% is level 4, and 70-79% is level 7. Each card in the progress breakdown shows that level on a chip, with the name and the bar next to it.
The level is worth watching for one specific reason: split checking switches on at overall level 7. See splits and mixed strategies.
XP
Every level is 1000 XP wide, which is the same thing as ten percentage points of mastery. That is why a category bar reads like “453/1000xp to lvl 6”: you are at 45.3% of the way through the current level, and the remaining 547 XP is 5.47 percentage points of that category.
After a session the results screen also shows XP Gained for that session, derived from how much your category percentages moved, added up across the categories you actually played. If the total is zero or negative, no XP figure is shown rather than a negative one.
This is why XP is not a measure of effort. A long session on material you already know moves the percentages very little; a short session that fixes a real leak moves them a lot.
Overall rank
The rank card at the top of the Home tab shows one of three names, and it follows your overall level rather than a separate calculation:

The card also shows how far into the current level you are, for example “685/1000xp to lvl 4”, with one segment of the bar per level.
This is the app’s own measurement of your level, not the one you picked during onboarding, and it replaces that choice over time.
Session Impact
The results screen also shows a Session Impact section, which is the per-category version of the same thing: which categories that session moved, and by how much.
